Adopted: January 2010Click on pug picture for larger image

My name is Lacy.
I am a sweet little girl (16 pounds) who just wants someone I can snuggle with and follow around. I have a cute underbite (my foster mom says) and I don’t even snore. I don’t like to be alone, so would do well with someone home most of the time.
My P.O.‘s (previous owners) took me to the H.S. (Humane Society) and said they were giving me up because I didn’t get along with their new young dogs. My F.M. (foster mom) thinks they made that up, cuz I get along just fine with my 4 foster brothers and sisters.
My F.M. took me to the doctor for an exam. The vet said it looked like I was “bred to death”. All I know is I had litter after litter of puppies. I am about 7 yrs old, and thats a lot of litters!
Anyway, during the spay surgery, the vet noticed I had alot of masses at each mammary gland. The vet removed these masses and said I have mammary cancer. We’ll need to get the pathology report back in a few days and see what my prognosis is. I feel pretty great now though, having those masses removed and knowing I won’t have any more litters of puppies.
My foster mom wants you all to know that mammary cancer can be prevented if you spay your female dog before one year of age. The risk of mammary tumors for dogs spayed before their first estsrus cycle (heat) is 0.05%. Mammary tumors are uncommon in male dogs but are among the most common in female dogs. About 35-50% of canine mammary tumors are malignant. Many of these tumors are hormone dependent, which is why early spay (before 1 year of age) is so important.
As an owner of a dog, please check the abdomen and mammary glands for any unusual masses or growths once a month. Start checking your pampered pooch when you first bring them home. Get to know what is normal for you dog, then when you discover an abnormal growth or mass, get to your vet for a checkup ASAP. Early detection and treatment are very important. But the key is early spay.
Now that foster mom is off her soapbox (she does that when something is real important to her), if you thnk you’d like me snuggling up next to you, send in an application and put my name, LACY, at the top. I’ll be ready for my new home real soon. I look forward to 2010, getting into my new home and meeting YOU. :)
All for now,
LACY
