Our Newest Arrivals!

Here are some of the pugs that have recently come into foster care

Charlotte, Anne and Emily

Hi, my name is Charlotte and I'm 8 weeks old. I weigh in at 4 lbs and growing! I love to sit on your shoulder like a parrot so I can see what is going on in the world.

I love to play with my foster brothers and sister; they play a little rough for me, but I'm tough and hang in there. My foster mom says I'm always stirring up trouble, but I say I am just a puppy, and that is what we do!.

I love to be around other pugs or if you have another kind of small dog that's ok, I'm thinking I would probably be ok with cats, as long as they have no front claws to hurt me.

I'm very healthy and want to find my forever home while I'm little so you can watch me grow.

Charlotte's adoption fee is $300.

Anne

Hi, I'm Charlotte's sister, Anne!  I'm also 8 weeks old.  I am very active and very playful, with the usual amount of puppy curiosity thrown in. I'm fine with other dogs.

Anne's adoption fee is $300.

Emily

Hi, I am Emily, sister of Charlotte and Anne!  Just 8 weeks old, I'm the quietest of the three sisters, if you can call a pug puppy quiet!

Emily's adoption fee is $300.

Honey and Gus
Honey (left) is approx. 4-5 yrs old, and her best friend Gus is approx 6-7 yrs. These two are sweet dogs who both need to lose a few pounds. They are great with other dogs and cats, and enjoy hanging out with their people.  Honey and Gus are best friends, and do not want to be separated.

ADOPTED!
Bubba
Bubba is a handsome 5-6 yr old pug. He came to APARN with a ruptured ear drum and a severely infected ear. He is ok with cats - he will occasionally try to chase them but doesn't harm them. Bubba is not a fan of large dogs, and would do better in a home with other small dogs. He has not been around children in his foster home. Bubba is content to sit on your lap for attention or to curl up next to you if you are busy. He is doing very well with housebreaking, and his foster mom has been working with him. He is very mannerly and knows better than to jump on you. He rarely ever barks. He is crate trained and will go right into his crate if you ask him to and provide him with a treat! Bubba will make a wonderful, loving companion for someone who wants a mild, well mannered lovebug of a pug!

ADOPTED
Aspen
Apsen is a 9 yr old male who was rescued from the county shelter. He is a sweet boy, gets along fine with other dogs and young children. Apsen has very few teeth, just his top front canines, and the molars on the top and bottom in the back.

Aspen's adoption fee is $200.
  Beau
Beau is a beautiful 9 yr old black pug boy. He came to APARN due to his owner's severe health issues. Beau is healthy and happy. Beau likes children, and gets along fine with other dogs and cats.

ADOPTED

Harley
I'm Harley, and I am a healthy 5 yr old boy. I love snuggling with people!  I get along great with little girls (check out the photo of me and my foster pal!) and am a little shy around other dogs at first.  I don't really like big dogs, so prefer a home with other pugs.

I have the cutest dinner ritual.  I like to have my food put down, then I want to give you a "high five" and have you tell me "ok" before I start eating!

ADOPTED

Stewart
Hi my name is Stewart, I'm 9 years young! I have a bad eye that needs to be removed, but the other one works pretty well. I can see up close, but if I could get glasses for distance vision, I would!  I also need to have my teeth cleaned, my foster mom says she wishes it could be done now, but I tested positive for tick fever and I'm currently on meds to clear that up; my doctor says it will take about 6 weeks.

I'm overweight by at least 10lbs, and I have been put on a strict diet, yuk!  But it has to be done, because I have a hard time breathing with all this extra weight. I know how to use the doggie door, and I know how to sit and shake!

I came to rescue because my mom was moving to Japan and couldn't take me along. That's OK, I know I will find another good home, who could resist this face!  I also get along with everyone, I love kids, and like hanging out with other dogs. I'm a good boy about taking my eye drops, which is twice a day and my pills. I would love a home where I can sit back and enjoy life with a special friend or two!

Stewart's adoption fee is $200.

Cookie
My name is Cookie and yes, I've had a few too many of them but I'm in Pug Weight Loss Boot Camp to lose about 10 pounds! I'm the sweetest girl, with the prettiest black face and quiet disposition. I'm 7, but will be 8 in a few weeks. I'm on ear medications for about 2 weeks, I walk really well on a leash (part of the Boot Camp requirements) and get along with my 3 pug roommates.  I would love to have a home where the family will keep me in shape.  I know how to use the doggie door, and I like children.  I got bit by a lab a couple of years ago, so I would rather not live with big dogs.

Cookie's adoption fee is $200.

"Obviously, I was not in the mood to have my photo taken!  My foster mom is working on getting some better photos of me, but I am a little camera shy!"
Princess
Princess came into rescue with her older brother Percy. Percy has been recently diagnosed with diabetes and their Mom could not afford to care for him. Princess is very attached to Percy and would love to be adopted with him, but with a secure home she would probably do fine on her own, as long as she had another male pug in the home with her.

LIKES:
* Other dogs
* Belly rubs
* Lounging on the couch
* Snuggling in bed
* Checking out every noise and putting her nose in everyone else’s business

DISLIKES:
* Ear medication (for a yeast infection). She runs and tries to hide when she sees the bottle
* Her website photo.  She wants you to know she is MUCH prettier in person!

MEDICAL:
* Currently on an ear wash and drops for her infection
* Will have a dentistry done soon (stinky breath!)

ADOPTED

Percy
Percy came into rescue with his younger sister Princess. Percy has been recently diagnosed with diabetes and their Mom could not afford to care for him. Princess is very attached to Percy and would love to be adopted with him, but with a secure home Percy should do just fine on his own.

LIKES:
* Being with other dogs
* Being held and snuggled
* Lounging on the couch
* Snuggling in bed
* Nylabones
DISLIKES:
* None
* He’d love more food
MEDICAL:
* Diabetes – His foster Mom was surprised to find out how easy his care is. He is fed the same type of food, in the same amount, at the same time twice a day. He receives a shot of insulin right afterwards. The needle is very small and fine and Percy doesn’t even flinch when he receives his shot
* He will need a blood test to measure his overall insulin level in a few weeks and then a couple of times a year from now on.
* He had a previous vaccine reaction and is currently past due on his shots. He will receive them later once it’s determined how regulated his diabetes is.
* He may eventually benefit from a prescription diabetic diet, but he currently is on Iams weight management.
* He should live to a normal, healthy pug old age
* He is currently receiving eye ointment because his eyes were a little red
OTHER:
* Uses a doggy door pretty much all the time. He sometimes doesn’t make it.
* Eats a limited amount of weight control food
* Fine with kids, cats, other dogs
* Very sweet tempered
* Loves to sit on the couch and keep you company
* Rides nicely in a car

Percy's adoption fee is $200.  (Adoption fee for Princes and Percy together is $350)

Savannah
Savannah is a young pug, between 1-2 years.  She was taken in as a stray at the Humane Society, and APARN was called because she needed to have her left eye removed, and appears to be blind the right eye. The doctors believe her eye was injured as a result of a larger dog attacking her.  She is a nice little pug, and very tiny, currently about 8 pounds.

Savannah went to Eye Care for Animals on 2/1, and it was determined that her right eye has no vision because the retina is detached. There is no way to restore her vision in this eye.  The doctors saw the scars on top of her head, and believe that the retina was detached at the same time the other eye was damaged by a large dog, who likely had most of her small head in its mouth.

Savannah needs a home without a pool, without small children, and without big dogs. She is a sweet little girl, and likes to snuggle with other pugs.  Even though blind, she is a smart dog, and learns the layout of her surroundings very quickly.  Because she is so small, she would make a wonderful companion for someone who likes to carry their pug everywhere!

ADOPTED

Petey
Petey is a 6 year pug. He came to APARN recently after he bit at his former owner's 9-month old child.  Petey had a lot of changes over the past few months, including a cross country move; the baby started crawling and a new Mastiff puppy in the home.  He may have been overwhelmed by all the changes. His foster home has discovered that Petey is also deaf.  He's a little big neurotic and a whole lot possessive, and all of the changes were probably too much for him.  He has settled down in his foster's multi-dog household and is doing much better.  He gets into minor skirmishes but usually only after a particularly tiring day.

LIKES:
* Petey would prefer to be any only dog, or live with one similar sized female dog.
* He likes being petted, but isn't very snuggly
* He is obsessed with toys, and likes having you tug on them and throw them for him.  He can do this for hours.
* Loves car rides
DISLIKES
*Other dogs coming near his toys or food; can get nasty
MEDICAL
* Petey has Cerebral Hyperplasia (born without part of his Cerebellum). This causes him to have a spastic and disjoined gait, much like if he had Cerebral Palsy.  This condition will not get worse over time.  Other parts of his brain took over the functions of the missing part.
*Occasional fecal incontinence.  This is because of his condition.  The further away from the brain, the less control he has of his body. He needs to be let out or walked on a regular schedule.
*Petey is deaf. You need to approach him from within his field of vision.
OTHER
* Petey needs a home without stairs.
* He tries hard to use the doggy door. At his foster home he has to use a ramp to get through it. This is hard with his motor problems.
*Petey eats a limited amount of weight control food
* Petey is fine with teenagers
*Petey is puppy like in personality. He is alter and playful, and just a charming boy!

"This is me, in the e-collar they made me wear for two weeks!  I HATED IT! (I think the "e" in "e-collar" stands for "evil"!!!)  You can see that my eye is red here, but it is much better now!"
Hope
Hope came into rescue with her 4 littermates when they were 3 months old. They had an underdeveloped immune system and Demodex mites and were very ill. The other 4 have recovered for the most part and have been adopted.

LIKES:
· Playing with anything and everything
· Biting anything and every thing
· Snuggling when she’s tired
· Sleeping in bed
· Loves car rides
DISLIKES:
· Being alone
MEDICAL:
· Hope has many medical issues and is considered special needs
· Had pneumonia, a grand mal seizure and a severe eye ulcer when she was turned in to APARN
· Demodex which she had a hard time fighting off
· Past bacterial and yeast infections of the skin
· A second neurological event at age 5 months. Possible reaction to the mite killing medication
· Severe eye ulcer in her right eye at 6 months. Needed a scleral graft to save her eye and her vision. She will only have peripheral vision in that eye
· Dry eye. Will be on medication for the rest of her life.
· A second bout of Demodex because of prednisone used systemically after the eye graft. Currently under treatment
· Possible hydrocephalus (water on the brain) This may explain her neurological events.
· Very compromised immune system. This may always be a problem. Currently has been unable to have a second round of puppy shots until other problems are resolved
· Had puppy “strangles” a strep type of infection
OTHER:
· Starting to use the doggy door. She is primarily paper trained
· Eats puppy food and takes an immune boosting supplement twice a day.
· Fine with kids, cats, other dogs
· Sort of leash trained
· Rides nicely in a car
· Very spoiled in her foster home. She is a little princess.
· Very bold, not afraid of much of anything.
· Hope will always need very close observation. Many of her problems went from bad to horrible in a matter of a few hours. She needs a commitment of prompt vet care any time she seems “off” in any way. She will always be a special needs pug, and her care will be more costly than that of a healthy pug.

Hope's adoption fee is $300.

Parker

Age: Almost 2 yrs old

Likes: I have lots of energy as I’m young and my favorite thing to do is run around the yard with my foster brothers and sister. I also like to sit on the couch and cuddle with my humans. I love kids and would like a home with at a least another dog or children to play with. I’ll make a wonderful companion for the right family. I’m very easy going, sweet and a well behaved gentleman.

Dislikes: The dog door, I just don’t get it!
Medications: None.

Other specifications: Parker has to go to the vet soon to have his neuter and vaccinations completed. Once that’s done, he’ll be ready for adoption! He’s potty trained but doesn’t like to use the dog door. He’ll just hold it and scratch the door a little to let you know he needs to go out. He’s a little on the thin side but is a good eater. He just has a lot of energy and high metabolism.

Why turned in to rescue: Parker was surrendered by his previous owner as she couldn’t take him with to her new home.
ADOPTED

This is a photo of Smokey and Bandit from April 2005, a more current photo is coming soon!
Smokey and Bandit
Smokey and Bandit are an adorable pair of 7 year olds, who have been together their entire lives.  Due to a change in living situation, their previous owner could no longer keep them.

Smokey is a black female and Bandit a fawn male.

\ADOPTED

Puppies
APARN just took in five healthy 7-month old puppies.

Left to right: Fonzy, Cleo, Charisma (in the front), Chewy and Sophia
Cleo is very timid, Sophia is the most dominant. They LOVE to sit in a lap.

Each puppy's adoption fee is $300.

ALL 5 HAVE BEEN ADOPTED

Mindy

Kind people rescued Mindy from a back yard puppy mill and brought her to APARN. At 5 years old, she had never been given a name. Because of her many litters of puppies, Mindy is out of shape and walks stiffly, though her health is basically good. Because of her past neglect, however, Mindy will need adopters with the patience to teach her how to be a family pet – she cowers easily, and her house training is not without accidents, though she is learning to use the doggie door. Mindy must finish a treatment of antibiotics for chest congestion before she can be spayed and available for adoption.
